Voice Typing

Speak and watch your words appear as text. Say punctuation out loud, switch language, then copy the result or save it as a .txt file. It needs a browser with speech recognition, such as Chrome, Edge or Safari.

This is an example. It is cleared when you press Start.

This site never receives your voice or your text. In Chrome and Edge the audio is sent to the browser maker's speech service to be turned into words, so you need an internet connection.

Which browsers work

  • Chrome and Edge, desktop and Android: supported. Needs an internet connection and microphone permission.
  • Safari 14.1 and later on Mac, iPhone and iPad: supported, as long as Siri or Dictation is switched on in system settings.
  • Firefox: not supported. Use Chrome or Edge, or your system's own dictation (Win+H on Windows).
  • Brave and some other Chromium browsers expose the feature but block the speech service, so you may see a network error.

How to use voice typing in your browser

Voice typing turns what you say into written text while you talk. This page uses the speech recognition built into your browser, so there is nothing to install.

  1. Open the page in Chrome, Edge or Safari. If the badge says "Not supported here", jump to the browser section below.
  2. Choose the language you will speak, for example English (US) or Bahasa Indonesia.
  3. Press Start and allow the microphone when the browser asks. It asks once per site.
  4. Speak in normal sentences. Grey italic text shows what the browser is still working out, and the finished sentence lands in the box.
  5. Press Stop, fix any slips by typing, then Copy or Download .txt.

You can click inside the text at any point and keep dictating. New words go in at the cursor, which makes it easy to insert a missing sentence in the middle of a draft.

How do I say punctuation?

Browsers rarely add commas and full stops for you, so you say them. With the punctuation option on, these words become symbols.

SayYou getExample
comma,"hello comma Sam" becomes Hello, Sam
period or full stop."see you soon period" becomes See you soon.
question mark?"are you free question mark"
exclamation mark!"well done exclamation mark"
colon, semicolon: ;"three things colon"
new lineone line breakGood for addresses and lists
new paragraphblank lineStarts a fresh paragraph
open bracket, close bracket( )"open bracket draft close bracket"

The catch: with the option on, the word "period" is always treated as a command. If you are dictating about a period of time, switch the option off for that stretch. Indonesian has the same idea with koma, titik, tanda tanya and baris baru, and a few sentences of practice is enough to make it natural.

Capitalisation is handled too: a letter after a full stop, a question mark or a new line is capitalised, and a lone "i" becomes "I" in English.

Which browsers support speech to text?

Support is narrower than for most web features, and it comes in two flavours.

The page must also be served over https and you must allow microphone access. If you once clicked Block, click the lock or camera icon beside the address, change the microphone to Allow, then press Start again.

Is my voice private?

This site does not receive your voice or your text, and nothing you dictate is stored here. The browser, however, is doing the recognition, and in Chrome and Edge that means sending the audio to Google or Microsoft. That is how their speech services work, and it is the reason this tool cannot run offline. Do not dictate passwords, card numbers or anything confidential that you would not send to those companies.

Getting cleaner results

Accuracy depends more on the audio than on how slowly you speak. A headset or phone held near your mouth beats a laptop microphone across the room. Background music and open-plan chatter cause the odd phantom word.

For a long document, dictate a section at a time and copy it out as you go. The text lives only in this page, so closing the tab clears it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type with my voice in a browser?

Press Start, allow the microphone, and speak. Words appear as you talk and the finished sentence is added to the box. Say "period" or "new line" where you want punctuation, then press Stop and copy the text.

Which browsers support voice typing?

Chrome and Edge on desktop and Android work best, and Safari 14.1 or later works on Mac and iPhone if Dictation or Siri is on. Firefox does not support it, and Brave usually fails with a network error.

Is voice typing free, and is my voice recorded?

It is free. This site never receives your voice or text. In Chrome and Edge, though, the browser sends the audio to its maker's speech service to transcribe it, so do not dictate anything you would not send to Google or Microsoft.

How do I add a comma, period or new line by voice?

Say the word: "comma", "period" or "full stop", "question mark", "new line", "new paragraph". The table beside the box lists them all. In Indonesian use "koma", "titik", "tanda tanya" and "baris baru".

Can I dictate in Indonesian?

Yes. Choose Bahasa Indonesia (id-ID) in the language list before pressing Start. Accuracy is good for clear speech in a quiet room, and names, brand names and slang are the words most often misheard.

Why does voice typing not work or stop by itself?

The usual causes are a blocked microphone permission, another app using the mic, no internet, or an unsupported browser. Browsers also end a session after a few seconds of silence, so the page restarts it unless you pressed Stop.

How accurate is speech to text?

For clear speech with a decent microphone it is usually right for most words, but expect to fix names, numbers and homophones such as "there" and "their". A headset in a quiet room helps more than speaking slowly.

Can I save what I dictated?

Yes. Press Copy to paste it elsewhere, or Download .txt to get a plain text file. The text lives only in this page, so reloading clears it unless you saved it first.
