How to use the online timer and stopwatch

This online timer has three modes on one page: a countdown with an alarm, a stopwatch that records laps, and a Pomodoro timer for work sessions. Each mode keeps its own state, so a stopwatch can keep running while you set up a countdown.

  1. Pick Timer, Stopwatch or Pomodoro at the top.
  2. For a countdown, tap a preset (it starts immediately) or type hours, minutes and seconds and press Start.
  3. Choose an alarm sound and volume on the right, and press Test sound once so you know it is audible.
  4. Press the corner button or F for a full-screen display you can read from across the room.

While anything is running, the remaining time shows in the browser tab title, so you can work in another tab and still glance at it.

5 minute timer, 10 minute timer and other presets

The presets cover the lengths people search for most. Use +1 min while a countdown runs if you need a little longer; it moves the end time without restarting.

PresetTypical use
1 minPlank hold, a one-minute speech drill, quick reset between tasks
3 minInstant noodles, a short brainstorm round
5 minBlack tea (3 to 5 minutes), a Pomodoro break, a class warm-up
10 minReading sprint, short meditation, cooling a cake before turning it out
15 minDaily stand-up meeting, long Pomodoro break
25 minOne Pomodoro focus session
30 minPractice test section, workout block
60 minExam, oven roast, timed writing

To set a timer for 10 minutes without clicking anything, add #10m to the page address and bookmark it. The format also takes seconds and hours: #90s, #1h30m. The Copy link to this timer button builds that link for whatever length you have set, which is handy for a teacher putting a timer on the classroom screen every day.

Online stopwatch with laps

Press Lap (or the L key) each time a runner passes the line, a swimmer touches the wall, or you finish a task. The table lists two numbers per lap:

Example: three 400 m laps at 1:32.10, 1:35.40 and 1:30.85. The totals read 1:32.10, 3:07.50 and 4:38.35, and the average lap is 1:32.78. The third lap is highlighted green as the fastest and the second red as the slowest, which makes pacing problems obvious at a glance.

Download CSV saves every lap with both values in clock format and in plain seconds. The seconds columns matter: Excel tends to misread "1:32.10" as a time of day, while 92.10 can be averaged or charted straight away.

Pomodoro timer 25/5: how to set it up

The classic Pomodoro pattern is 25 minutes of focus, a 5-minute break, and a longer break after four sessions. With a 15-minute long break, one full round looks like this:

BlockStartsEnds
Focus 10:000:25
Short break0:250:30
Focus 20:300:55
Short break0:551:00
Focus 31:001:25
Short break1:251:30
Focus 41:301:55
Long break1:552:10

That is 100 minutes of focused work in 2 hours 10 minutes. For writing or programming, 25 minutes can feel too short to get into the problem; 50/10 is a better fit there. The settings that work best for most people: start breaks automatically on, start the next focus session automatically off. Breaks then begin on time, but you decide when to sit back down.

Lengths are adjustable from 1 to 180 minutes, and the long break can come after anything from 1 to 12 sessions.

Why some browser timers drift, and how this one keeps time

A naive web timer subtracts one second every time a one-second interval fires. Browsers delay those intervals when the tab is hidden, sometimes to once a minute, so a 25-minute countdown in a background tab can finish minutes late. This page never counts ticks. It stores the moment the countdown should end and recalculates from the clock every time it draws, so the number is right even after the tab has been hidden for an hour or the page has been reloaded.

The alarm is handled the same way. When you press Start, the sound is scheduled on the Web Audio clock for the exact end time, and that clock is not slowed in background tabs. Optional desktop notifications appear too, but the browser only asks for permission when you tick the box.

The honest limitation: closing the tab, putting a laptop to sleep, or a phone browser freezing a background tab will stop the alarm. On a phone, keep the page in front and tick Keep the screen on.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set a timer for 10 minutes?

Click the 10 min preset and the countdown starts immediately. For other lengths type the hours, minutes and seconds (for example 0 h 7 m 30 s) and press Start. You can also bookmark this page with #10m at the end of the address to open it ready at 10 minutes.

Will the timer still ring if I switch to another tab?

Yes. When you press Start the alarm is scheduled on the browser's audio clock, so it plays on time even though browsers slow down ordinary timers in background tabs. Keep the tab open and the volume up: closing the tab or letting the laptop sleep stops it.

What is the difference between lap time and total on a stopwatch?

Lap time is the time since the previous lap; total (the split) is the time since you pressed Start. If you press Lap at 1:02.40 and again at 2:01.10, the second lap time is 58.70 seconds and its total is 2:01.10.

What is a Pomodoro timer 25 5?

It means 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break. After four focus sessions you take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes, so one full round with a 15-minute long break takes 2 hours 10 minutes.

Can I export stopwatch lap times to Excel?

Yes. Download CSV saves every lap with its number, lap time and total, plus both values in plain seconds (for example 58.70) so Excel or Google Sheets can calculate averages without reformatting.

What are the keyboard shortcuts?

Space starts and pauses, R resets, L records a lap, F switches to full screen, + adds a minute to the countdown and Esc silences the alarm. Shortcuts are ignored while you are typing in a field.

Why does my phone screen turn off while the timer runs?

Phones dim the screen after 30 seconds to a few minutes of no touch. Tick Keep the screen on and supported browsers (most current Chrome, Edge and Safari versions) leave the display lit while a timer or stopwatch is running.

Does the timer keep running if I reload the page?

Yes. The end time is saved in your browser, so a 25-minute countdown that you reload after 10 minutes shows 15:00 left. Browsers only allow sound after you interact with a page, so tap anywhere once after reloading to re-enable the alarm.
